1967 AL Standings and League Leaders

 September 20, 1967

The Detroit Tigers magic # is 4 with 9 games left to play in the 1967 MLB season. The Boston Red Sox are the only team that can overtake them, but it's a long shot. The Red Sox Carl Yastrzemski is just .001 behind Al Kaline for the batting title and the Triple Crown.

1967 AL Game: Bsn. @ Det.

 September 19, 1967

It was quite a pitcher's duel tonight in the game between the Detroit Tigers and the Boston Red Sox. It was a very important contest for both clubs. Mickey Lolich got the start for Detroit and Lee Stange started for Boston.
The game remained scoreless until the 8th when the Red Sox got a run in the top of the inning on a bases loaded walk by Lolich to George Scott. But Detroit struck back in the bottom of the inning with a run of their own. Norm Cash doubled home Al Kaline with a close play at the plate. Then, in the bottom of the 9th with 1 out, Eddie Mathews pinch hit for Lolich and he doubled. Mathews was replaced by pinch runner Tommy Matchick. Dick McAuliffe came to the plate next and he doubled over the head of Reggie Smith. Matchick scored and the Tigers had a 2-1 victory. Detroit's lead in the AL Standings over 2nd place Boston is now back to 6 games and their magic number is 5.

Dick McAuliffe had 2 base hits and Mickey Lolich racked up an impressive total
of 10 strikeouts at Tiger Stadium as the Detroit Tigers won a thriller over
the Boston Red Sox in, 2 to 1.

Detroit won the game with a run in the bottom of the 9th inning. After an out
was recorded, Eddie Mathews doubled. McAuliffe came to the plate and doubled
resulting in a mighty exciting win for Detroit and the 20,692 home town fans
in attendance. Neither team was able to score until the 8th inning.

Lolich(17-8) lasted until the end allowing 1 run for the win. John Wyatt(2-5)
absorbed the loss in relief. When asked about his strikeout total for the
game, Lolich offered, 'The fan's really got into it. It is fun to see them
tally up the strikeout totals up there in the stands. Fortunately, I kept
them busy tonight - of course, it would be all for naught without the 'W'.'

1967 AL Game: Bsn. @ Det.

 September 18, 1967

The Boston Red Sox came into Detroit today for 2 games against the 1st place Tigers. It would be the last time the two teams would meet in the regular season. The Red Sox have a 9-7 record this year against Detroit, the only AL club with a winning record against them, but trail in the standings by 6 games.
The game proved to be a real battle between the teams with the lead changing 5 times.  Boston tied the game 3-3 in the 9th inning then won it with a run in the 10th. The victory moves the Red Sox within 5 games of the Tigers. With time running out for Boston, tomorrow's game is huge for any chance of overtaking Detroit.

Cisco Carlos(3-2) thrilled the fans at Comiskey Park as he crafted a no-hit
masterpiece against the Cleveland Indians. The Chicago White Sox won by a

The partisan crowd cheered every Cleveland out from the 7th inning on. He

Jim Lonborg reeled off a total of 10 strikeouts at Fenway Park where the
Boston Red Sox beat the Kansas City Athletics 5 to 4.

Lonborg(20-9) gave a fine effort for Boston. He went 9 innings surrendering
10 hits and no walks. Kansas City had a chance to come back in the 9th but
they came up short.

Catfish Hunter(16-9) absorbed the loss. He gave up 4 runs and 6 hits in 6
innings. When asked about his strikeout total for the game, Lonborg offered,
'The fan's really got into it. It is fun to see them tally up the strikeout
totals up there in the stands. Fortunately, I kept them busy tonight - of
course, it would be all for naught without the 'W'.'

1967 AL: Standings and League Leaders

 September 10, 1967

My Detroit Tigers are still in 1st place and now have a 5 game lead over the 2nd place Boston Red Sox. The Kansas City Athletics are still in the mix as are the Minnesota Twins. KC is a whopping 20 games better than their actual 1967 record. Detroit has had to make up some games canceled by weather earlier in the season and have gone 9-3 this month. The Tigers also have a very impressive Runs For/Runs Against ratio of +145.
Boston's Carl Yastrzemski has finally nudged past the Tiger's Al Kaline for the league lead in hitting, putting him on course to win the Triple Crown. Minnesota's Harmon Killebrew and Bob Allison along with Washington's Frank Howard are putting up good power numbers. The Red Sox Jim Lonborg leads the AL in Wins and K's.
