1967 AL Game: Bsn. @ Det.

 September 19, 1967

It was quite a pitcher's duel tonight in the game between the Detroit Tigers and the Boston Red Sox. It was a very important contest for both clubs. Mickey Lolich got the start for Detroit and Lee Stange started for Boston.
The game remained scoreless until the 8th when the Red Sox got a run in the top of the inning on a bases loaded walk by Lolich to George Scott. But Detroit struck back in the bottom of the inning with a run of their own. Norm Cash doubled home Al Kaline with a close play at the plate. Then, in the bottom of the 9th with 1 out, Eddie Mathews pinch hit for Lolich and he doubled. Mathews was replaced by pinch runner Tommy Matchick. Dick McAuliffe came to the plate next and he doubled over the head of Reggie Smith. Matchick scored and the Tigers had a 2-1 victory. Detroit's lead in the AL Standings over 2nd place Boston is now back to 6 games and their magic number is 5.

Dick McAuliffe had 2 base hits and Mickey Lolich racked up an impressive total
of 10 strikeouts at Tiger Stadium as the Detroit Tigers won a thriller over
the Boston Red Sox in, 2 to 1.

Detroit won the game with a run in the bottom of the 9th inning. After an out
was recorded, Eddie Mathews doubled. McAuliffe came to the plate and doubled
resulting in a mighty exciting win for Detroit and the 20,692 home town fans
in attendance. Neither team was able to score until the 8th inning.

Lolich(17-8) lasted until the end allowing 1 run for the win. John Wyatt(2-5)
absorbed the loss in relief. When asked about his strikeout total for the
game, Lolich offered, 'The fan's really got into it. It is fun to see them
tally up the strikeout totals up there in the stands. Fortunately, I kept
them busy tonight - of course, it would be all for naught without the 'W'.'
