reducing his ERA from 3.86 to 3.14. Cincinnati had just 2 hits for the
night.

Bill Singer(3-2) was the loser. He surrendered just 1 hit and 2 walks in 8

1967 AL Standings and League Leaders

 June 16, 1967

We're in the middle of June in the 1967 MLB season. My Detroit Tigers are back into 1st place in the AL after splitting a 4 game series against the 2nd place Minnesota Twins. By winning the first 2 games of that series, the Twins briefly moved past Detroit into 1st place. Minnesota is actually tied with the Boston Red Sox and Kansas City A's for 2nd in the standings. 9 of the 10 teams in the AL  have a shot at the pennant at this stage of the season. The '3rd place' Chicago White Sox boast the top pitching in the league by a large margin. Boston, Detroit and Minnesota have the best offenses.
Detroit's Al Kaline has been in a bit of a slump lately, but still leads the AL in BA (.365) and is 2nd in RBI (42). Teammate Willie Horton leads in RBI (45). Washington's Frank Howard leads in HR (18). Boston's Carl Yastrzemski (.350, 14, 38) is in the top 5 of the major hitting categories, so he's making a bid for the Triple Crown.
Boston's Jim Lonborg and KC's Catfish Hunter both top the AL in Wins with 9. Lonborg is also 4th in ERA (2.32) and 1st in Strikeouts (95). KC's Chuck Dobson (6-1) has the best ERA (1.69).  California Angel Bill Kelso leads in Saves (13) and the A's Bert Campaneris leads in Stolen Bases (33) by a large margin.

1967 NL Standings and League Leaders

 June 15, 1967

It's the middle of June in the 1967 MLB season. The Chicago Cubs are listed as the NL 1st place ballclub, but only by percentage. The Cubs actually trail the Cincinnati Reds by 1/2 a game. This 'listing' shows just how tight the pennant race is in the NL this year. The listed 7th place club, the Houston Astros, are only 4 games back and they are actually tied with the Pittsburgh Pirates and San Francisco Giants. Every team except for the New York Mets are still very much into the race for the pennant. The Cincinnati Reds have had the top offense in the NL and the St. Louis Cardinals, the best pitching.
Atlanta's Hank Aaron, bidding for the Triple Crown (.363 BA, 13 HR, 45 RBI), leads the NL in BA, is 3rd in HR and is 3rd in RBI. Philadelphia's Dick Allen is also making a bid for the Triple Crown (.342, 15, 47).  Houston's Jimmy Wynn leads the league in HR (19) and RBI (49). The Pittsburgh Pirates have 3 of the top 5 players for best BA and Roberto Clemente is 4th in RBI (43). St. Louis Cardinal Lou Brock leads the NL in Stolen Bases (27).
The Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Larry Jackson (10-2, 1.97 ERA) is among many pitchers having an excellent season. Houston's Mike Cuellar, SF's Juan Marichal, the Red's Gary Nolan, and the Cardinal's Bob Gibson are in that group. Pittsburgh Pirate Roy Face leads the NL in Saves (10).

1967 NL Game: Atl. @ Phil.

 June 14, 1967

Philadelphia's Larry Jackson became the first 10 game winner in MLB this season by pitching a gem against the Atlanta Braves. Jackson went the distance in the 2-0 shutout victory over the Braves. The Phillies scored a single run in the 1st inning and that would be all Jackson needed. He allowed only 5 hits in the game and lowered his ERA to 1.97 on the season.

Larry Jackson had a strong outing as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the
Atlanta Braves by a score of 2 to 0 at Connie Mack Stadium.

Philadelphia claimed the early lead in the first inning scoring a single run
on 3 base hits. Tony Gonzalez lashed a single. Tony Taylor stepped up next
and he delivered a base-hit. Dick Allen was next to the plate, but was
promptly struck out. One out later, Don Lock came to the plate and laced a
base-knock scoring the run. That early run support was all that
Jackson(10-2) required. Philadelphia finished with 7 hits in the victory.

Ken Johnson(6-4) took the loss. Gene Mauch was very impressed with his
pitcher, Jackson, 'He had unusually good pitch placement tonight. It was
almost unfair - but a beautiful game to watch from where I sat'

1967 AL Game: Det. @ Min.

 June 13, 1967

It was another extra inning affair tonight in game 2 of a 4 game series between the Detroit Tigers and the Minnesota Twins. Just like last night's contest, it took 13 innings to decide this one. And again, the Twins came away with the victory.
Detroit's Denny McLain and Minnesota's Dean Chance went deep into the game which was tied at 4 after 9 complete innings. Both pitched well, but the defense made costly errors for both clubs. Detroit scored a run in the top of the 13th for a 5-4 lead, but Minnesota scored 2 in the bottom of the inning off recently called up rookie pitcher Mike Marshall to win the game 6-5. Marshall hadn't allowed a run in 5 IP but couldn't get the final out in the 13th. After walking Harmon Killebrew to load the bases, Tony Oliva came through with a clutch RBI single to win the game. The victory moved Minnesota past Detroit into 1st place in the AL.

1967 AL Game : Det. @ Min.

 June 12, 1967

The AL 1st place Detroit Tigers flew into Minnesota today for a 4 game series against the 2nd place Twins, who trailed the Tigers by 1.5 games. Detroit has been on a grueling road trip since June 2, going from NY to KC to California and now to Minnesota. The Tigers have played well and have gone 7-4 so far on the trip. They head home after the 4 big games against Minnesota.
In tonight's contest Mickey Lolich started for Detroit and Jim Merritt got the nod for the Twins. The matchup proved to be a dandy. Lolich struck out a season high 13 batters and carried a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the 9th. 3rd baseman Don Wert had done all the damage for Detroit. He hit a run scoring double in the 5th and hit a 2-run homer in the 7th, accounting for all the Tiger's scoring in regulation. Merritt went 8 innings for the Twins, giving up 3 runs, before being lifted for a pinch hitter in the bottom of the 8th.
In the bottom of the 9th inning Bob Allison led off against Lolich with his 10th homerun of the season to tie things up at 3. Lolich managed to get out of the inning without allowing any more runs and the game went to extra innings. In the top of the 11th Willie Horton doubled and eventually scored on a SF from Norm Cash for a 4-3 Detroit lead. But the Twins scratched out a run off rookie pitcher Pat Dobson in the bottom of the inning and the game continued into the 13th. Johnny Podres was pitching for Detroit in the bottom of the 13th when he walked Harmon Killabrew leading off, then retired Tony Oliva on a popout. Bob Allison came up next to the plate and he hit a 2-run bomb into the leftfield seats for a 6-4 Minnesota victory. Allison finished the game going 3 for 5 with 2 home runs and 3 RBI. With the Win, the Twins now trail Detroit by just a 1/2 game.
