June 16, 1967
We're in the middle of June in the 1967 MLB season. My Detroit Tigers are back into 1st place in the AL after splitting a 4 game series against the 2nd place Minnesota Twins. By winning the first 2 games of that series, the Twins briefly moved past Detroit into 1st place. Minnesota is actually tied with the Boston Red Sox and Kansas City A's for 2nd in the standings. 9 of the 10 teams in the AL have a shot at the pennant at this stage of the season. The '3rd place' Chicago White Sox boast the top pitching in the league by a large margin. Boston, Detroit and Minnesota have the best offenses.
Detroit's Al Kaline has been in a bit of a slump lately, but still leads the AL in BA (.365) and is 2nd in RBI (42). Teammate Willie Horton leads in RBI (45). Washington's Frank Howard leads in HR (18). Boston's Carl Yastrzemski (.350, 14, 38) is in the top 5 of the major hitting categories, so he's making a bid for the Triple Crown.
Boston's Jim Lonborg and KC's Catfish Hunter both top the AL in Wins with 9. Lonborg is also 4th in ERA (2.32) and 1st in Strikeouts (95). KC's Chuck Dobson (6-1) has the best ERA (1.69). California Angel Bill Kelso leads in Saves (13) and the A's Bert Campaneris leads in Stolen Bases (33) by a large margin.
