The AL 1st place Detroit Tigers flew into Minnesota today for a 4 game series against the 2nd place Twins, who trailed the Tigers by 1.5 games. Detroit has been on a grueling road trip since June 2, going from NY to KC to California and now to Minnesota. The Tigers have played well and have gone 7-4 so far on the trip. They head home after the 4 big games against Minnesota.
In tonight's contest Mickey Lolich started for Detroit and Jim Merritt got the nod for the Twins. The matchup proved to be a dandy. Lolich struck out a season high 13 batters and carried a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the 9th. 3rd baseman Don Wert had done all the damage for Detroit. He hit a run scoring double in the 5th and hit a 2-run homer in the 7th, accounting for all the Tiger's scoring in regulation. Merritt went 8 innings for the Twins, giving up 3 runs, before being lifted for a pinch hitter in the bottom of the 8th.
In the bottom of the 9th inning Bob Allison led off against Lolich with his 10th homerun of the season to tie things up at 3. Lolich managed to get out of the inning without allowing any more runs and the game went to extra innings. In the top of the 11th Willie Horton doubled and eventually scored on a SF from Norm Cash for a 4-3 Detroit lead. But the Twins scratched out a run off rookie pitcher Pat Dobson in the bottom of the inning and the game continued into the 13th. Johnny Podres was pitching for Detroit in the bottom of the 13th when he walked Harmon Killabrew leading off, then retired Tony Oliva on a popout. Bob Allison came up next to the plate and he hit a 2-run bomb into the leftfield seats for a 6-4 Minnesota victory. Allison finished the game going 3 for 5 with 2 home runs and 3 RBI. With the Win, the Twins now trail Detroit by just a 1/2 game.
