1967 NL Game Stories

 June 16, 1967

    The pitchers were really dealing in today's slate of games in the NL. Cincinnati's Mel Queen won a 1-0 game, St. Louis Cardinal Ray Washburn came away with a 2-0 shutout victory and the other 3 games played ended in scores of 3-2, 3-1 and 3-1.

Jim Landis hit 2 doubles and Bo Belinsky tossed a complete game as the Houston
Astros topped the Atlanta Braves by a score of 3 to 2 at The
Astrodome.
 
Belinsky(5-1) was very good in the win.  He allowed only 7 hits and 3 walks in
9 innings.  Atlanta made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push
the needed runs across.  
 
Denny Lemaster(5-5) was tagged with the loss.  He surrendered 3 runs and 7
hits in 6 innings.

Dick Selma didn't allow a hit until the 6th inning as the New York Mets beat
the Chicago Cubs by a score of 3 to 1.
 
Selma(2-0) was tremendous on the mound for New York.  He surrendered only 1
hit and 2 walks in 8 innings.  The right-handed Selma had his no-hit bid
broken up by Curt Simmons who singled with one out in the 6th inning.
Chicago was out-hit by New York, 10 hits to 2.  
 
Selma got help from Ron Taylor who was credited with his 3rd save.  The losing
pitcher was Simmons(1-9).  Wth the win New York now has a record of 19-36.
With the loss, the Chicago ballclub's record is 32-24.

Mel Queen came through with a solid 9 innings as the Cincinnati Reds bested
the Los Angeles Dodgers 1 to 0 at Dodger Stadium.
 
Queen(1-2) was indeed brilliant as he hand-cuffed the Los Angeles offense.  He
was stingy on the mound, allowing just 4 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings
reducing his ERA from 3.86 to 3.14.  Cincinnati had just 2 hits for the
night.  
 
Bill Singer(3-2) was the loser.  He surrendered just 1 hit and 2 walks in 8
innings.  'We didn't have a whole lot of chances tonight,' Walt Alston said.
'Queen just was too much for our guys.'

Tony Taylor had 2 base hits and Larry Jackson pitched a complete game at
Connie Mack Stadium where the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Pittsburgh
Pirates by the score of 3 to 1.
 
Philadelphia scored 2 runs in the decisive 5th inning with the help of 3 hits.
After an out was recorded, Tony Gonzalez kicked off the action when he
singled.  Jackson next to the plate and he laid down a sacrifice bunt.
Taylor then ripped a base-knock driving in a run.  Gary Sutherland came up
and he doubled scoring the final run of the inning.  Philadelphia rapped out
9 hits for the night.  
 
The win went to Jackson(11-2) who allowed 1 run in the game. Billy O'Dell(2-7)
took the loss.  He pitched 7 innings giving up 7 hits and no walks.
 
With this win, Philadelphia has a 32-26 record.  They have been 6-4 lately.
Pittsburgh has a record of 29-28 after the loss.

Ray Washburn delivered 9 solid innings as the St. Louis Cardinals bested the
San Francisco Giants 2 to 0 at Candlestick Park.
 
Washburn(6-3) pitched one of his finer games as he simply was too much for the
San Francisco batters.  He didn't give up much, just 4 hits and no walks in 9
innings seeing his ERA drop from 2.62 to 2.36.  St. Louis had only 6 hits for
the night.  
 
Lindy McDaniel(2-3) took the loss.  He pitched 5 and 1/3 innings and
surrendered 6 hits and no walks. The St. Louis ballclub's record now stands
at 31-25.  With the loss San Francisco now has a record of 30-29.
