1967 AL Game: Det. @ Chi. McLain No-Hitter!

 May 3, 1967

Detroit's Denny McLain pitched a no-hitter tonight against the Chicago White Sox, and the Tigers came away with a 2-0 victory.  In a game that was expected to be a pitching duel, it didn't disappoint.  Chicago's Gary Peters matched McLain until the 5th inning when Detroit 's Jim Northrup led off with a triple and scored on Bill Freehan's single. The Tigers added a run in the 8th for a 2-0 lead that would hold up until the end. Peters only gave up 2 runs on 3 hits in his 7 2/3 innings of work. But this game belonged to McLain. Denny walked 3, hit 2 batters and committed an error. But he didn't allow a hit or a run and improved his record to 3-0.

History was made in Chicago as Denny McLain(3-0) tossed a no-hitter and the
Detroit Tigers defeated the Chicago White Sox by the score of 2 to
0.

Although disappointed to see the hometown team lose, the fans certainly were
appropriately impressed with the dominating, no-hit performance of McLain.
He walked 3 Chicago batters. The Detroit players and coaches started to
leave McLain alone with his thoughts after the game reached the 7th inning.
By the time the 9th inning rolled around, you could hear a pin drop every
time he went to his wind-up - and an explosion after every out. Detroit
managed only 3 hits on the night.

Gary Peters(3-1) was tagged with the loss. 'Not in my wildest dreams did I
think this would happen!' McLain said as he stood at home plate to salute the
fans. 'Once I got into the later innings, I decided to challenge every
hitter, and that turned out to be the right decision!'

1967 AL Standings and League Leaders

 May 1, 1967

The first month of the 1967 AL is complete. My Detroit Tigers have gotten off to a good start keeping pace with the pennant winning (IRL) Boston Red Sox. The 2 teams are tied for 1st place in the AL. The Cleveland Indians and the Chicago White Sox have also gotten off to good starts. The White Sox have been getting excellent pitching and the Indians have been getting good run production. One team that hasn't done well are the New York Yankees. As a matter of fact they have been down right terrible. Off to a 1-14 start, the Yankees have lost their last 10 in a row. Bad pitching and even worse hitting have plagued NY so far this season. The other teams in the league are just finding their footing at this early stage in the season.
Detroit's Al Kaline is off to a fast start and leads the AL in hitting with a .426 BA. Teammate Jim Northrup is tied with Cleveland's Fred Whitfield for most RBI with 14. Don Mincher (Cal.), along with Whitfield and  Duke Simms (Cle.), lead in HR with 4.
There's been lots of excellent pitching so far this year. Boston's Jose Santiago is 4-0, tops in the AL, with 2 Saves and a 0.00 ERA. All in relief appearances. Chicago's Gary Peters is 3-0 with a microscopic 0.33 ERA in 3 Starts.

1967 NL Standings and League Leaders

 May 1, 1967

It's been an intriguing start to the 1967 NL season. The opening month of April is in the books and finds the San Francisco Giants in a 1st place tie with the Philadelphia Phillies. The Giants pitching has been phenomenal, allowing only 1.83 runs per game. The Phillies are 2nd in the NL pitching category and tops in runs scored with 81. Only the LA Dodgers and New York Mets have been floundering, mainly attributed to their lack of scoring. The rest of the teams in the NL look very much in the running for the pennant.
Cincinnati's Tony Perez and Philadelphia's Dick Allen standout among the players in the hitting category. Perez (.411, 5, 19) is 3rd in BA and 1st in HR and RBI. Allen is hitting at a .450 clip and is 2nd in RBI with 18. The Phillies Chris Short is 4-0, tops in the league and the Giant's Juan Marichal is 3-1 with a 1.31 ERA and a league leading 40 K's.

1967 NL Game Stories

 April 30, 1967

Runs were at a premium today as the pitching dominated in both games of a double header between the New York Mets and the Cincinnati Reds. In game 1 it took 9 innings before the Reds scored and came away with a 1-0 victory. Ironically, after excellent pitching all game long, the only run scored came on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 9th scoring Tony Perez.
In game 2, the Mets Tom Seaver  and the Reds Gary Nolan dueled to the end before Cincinnati came away with a 2-0 victory. Nolan got the 11 strikeout, complete game/shutout Win, his 1st of the season.

Billy McCool took a no-hitter into the 8th inning as the Cincinnati Reds won a
dandy at Crosley Field over the ice-cold New York Mets, 1 to 0.

The game was decided in the bottom of the 9th inning. Pete Rose smacked a
single. Tony Perez was next and he reached on an error. Jack Lamabe then
threw a high and inside pitch that got by the catcher; it was ruled a passed
ball. After an out was recorded, Don Pavletich came to the plate and drew a
walk to load the bases. Lamabe then unleashed a wild pitch giving Cincinnati
the win much to the delight of the home town crowd. For the game Cincinnati
out-hit New York 6 to 3.

The victory went to Ted Abernathy(2-2) who went 1 and 2/3 innings, allowing no
runs. The left-handed McCool lost a no-hitter when Sandy Alomar singled with
nobody out in the 8th inning. Lamabe(0-1) was hit with the loss in relief.
He pitched 1/3 of an inning and surrendered 1 hit and 1 walk.

Gary Nolan dominated striking out 11 New York batters as the Cincinnati Reds
bested the ice-cold New York Mets 2 to 0 at Crosley Field.

Nolan(1-1) was in control of the game from the outset. He didn't allow much,
just 8 hits and 4 walks in 9 innings reducing his ERA from 3.60 to 2.48. New
York went down without a fight in the 9th.

Tom Seaver(2-2) was the loser. Everyone seemed to enjoy the performance of
Nolan - except New York. Wes Westrum lamented, 'He just was 'on' this
afternoon. He was keeping our guys off balance all game. A fine game by a
good strikeout pitcher - makes it a fun game for the hometown fans -
unfortunately we were the visitors!'

streaking Philadelphia Phillies beat the New York Mets by the score of 6 to
5.

Short(3-0) delivered a fine performance for Philadelphia. He surrendered 8
hits and 3 walks in 8 and 2/3 innings. New York had a chance in the 9th but
they came up short.

Gary Wagner was credited with his 1st save. Don Cardwell(1-1) took the loss.
He surrendered 11 hits and 4 walks in 9 innings.

Short didn't realize how many strikeouts he was racking up. When told he had
10 he was obviously surprised, 'No kidding? Man, I knew that I had a decent
total, but I didn't think I had K'd that many. Say, that's pretty good,
isn't it?'

1967 NL Game: Cin. @ Hous.

 April 21, 1967

Mike Cuellar led the way to the Houston Astro's 3-2 walk off victory over the Cincinnati Reds tonight.

Cuellar struck out a 1967 MLB season high 14 batters in the game and played a big part in scoring the winning run. With the game tied at 2 in the bottom of the 9th, Chuck Harrison led off with a base hit and soon moved to 2nd after a balk was called on Red's reliever Gerry Arrigo. Cuellar came to the plate and laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt, moving Harrison to 3rd.  After another out couldn't advance the runner, Sonny Jackson came up and laced a base hit scoring the winning run. Cuellar went the distance for his 2nd Win, allowing only 1 earned run while striking out 14 batters.
