1967 NL Game Stories

 April 24, 1967

  After losing on Opening Day, the Philadelphia Phillies have won 9 straight games. Today they took both ends of a double header against the New York Mets. The winning streak has propelled the red hot Phillies into 1st place in the NL.

Chris Short reeled off a total of 10 strikeouts at Shea Stadium where the
streaking Philadelphia Phillies beat the New York Mets by the score of 6 to
5.
 
Short(3-0) delivered a fine performance for Philadelphia.  He surrendered 8
hits and 3 walks in 8 and 2/3 innings.  New York had a chance in the 9th but
they came up short.  
 
Gary Wagner was credited with his 1st save.  Don Cardwell(1-1) took the loss.
He surrendered 11 hits and 4 walks in 9 innings.  
 
Short didn't realize how many strikeouts he was racking up.  When told he had
10 he was obviously surprised, 'No kidding? Man, I knew that I had a decent
total, but I didn't think I had K'd that many.  Say, that's pretty good,
isn't it?'

In a lop-sided win the sizzling Philadelphia Phillies tallied 4 runs in the
8th inning and ripped the New York Mets by a 7 to 1 count.
 
In the top of the 7th inning Philadelphia went on top for good with 2 runs.
Bobby Wine led off and started the rally when he drew a walk.  Cookie Rojas
stepped into the batter's box and he laid down a sacrifice bunt.  One out
later, Tito Francona then cleared the fences for a two-run home run.  New
York had 9 hits in the game while Philadelphia had 6, but Philadelphia had
the more timely hits.  
 
Dick Hall(1-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 4 innings. Bill Denehy(0-2)
was given the loss.  It was another victory for Philadelphia at Shea Stadium.
Now their winning streak stands at 9 games.
