There were some fine pitching performances in the slate of games played today in the NL. LA's Claude Osteen (11-14) went 10 innings, getting the shutout Win in the Dodgers 1-0 victory over the Atlanta Braves.
The 1st place Chicago Cubs defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 5-2. Rich Nye (16-5) went the distance for the Cubs getting his 16th Win of the season. The Cincinnati Reds Gary Nolan (9-9) and San Francisco Giants Mike McCormick (11-11) dueled it out with SF getting the 1-0 decision. Tommie Sisk (12-5) went the distance for the red-hot Pittsburgh Pirates as they defeated the New York Mets 7-1. Houston's Bruce Von Hoff (1-1) with help from Dave Eilers defeated the floundering St. Louis Cardinals 3-1.

Claude Osteen tossed a shutout and center fielder Willie Davis had 2 base hits
as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Atlanta Braves in 10 innings by the
score of 1 to 0 at Dodger Stadium.
The score was a scoreless tie after nine. Finally, Los Angeles pulled the
game out in the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Len Gabrielson
doubled. One out later, Davis came up and he delivered a single making Los
Angeles the winners and sending the 27,866 fans home happy. Los Angeles had
a total of 8 hits for the game.
For Osteen(11-14) it was his 3rd shutout this year. Ed Rakow(1-2) was given
the loss in relief. With this win, Los Angeles has a 58-60 record. They
have been 5-5 lately. With the loss, the Atlanta ballclub's record is 55-62.

Rich Nye pitched a complete game at Connie Mack Stadium where the Chicago Cubs
beat the Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 5 to 2.
Nye(16-4) had a solid outing for Chicago. He went 9 innings and surrended up
10 hits and no walks. Neither team managed to score after the 4th inning.
Jim Bunning(13-13) was tagged with the loss. He allowed 6 hits and 4 walks in
7 innings.
CINCINNATI AT SAN FRANCISCO

Mike McCormick pitched 9 strong innings at Candlestick Park where the San
Francisco Giants beat the Cincinnati Reds 1 to 0.
San Francisco scored the only run of the game in the 6th inning. The
Cincinnati offense proved no trouble in the 9th.
For McCormick(11-11) it was his 4th shutout this year. The losing pitcher was
Gary Nolan(9-9). Dave Bristol lamented, 'McCormick was really aggressive
today. He kept coming after our hitters. Heck, why not. he kept sitting our
guys down one after another - like so many bowling pins!'
NEW YORK AT PITTSBURGH

Homeruns- W.Stargell(17th)
First baseman Willie Stargell slammed a homerun and had 4 RBI and Tommie Sisk
was able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete game as
the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the awful New York Mets by a score of 7 to
1.
Stargell made sure the Pittsburgh fans enjoyed themselves. He doubled which
scored a run in the 1st inning, doubled in the 5th inning and clubbed a
three-run home run in the 6th inning. Pittsburgh finished with 14 hits in
the victory.
The victory went to Sisk(12-5) who went the distance allowing 1 run. Danny
Frisella(0-4) was hit with the loss. He was touched for 12 hits and 3 walks
in 6 innings.
ST. LOUIS AT HOUSTON

Bruce Von Hoff(1-1) and Dick Hughes(6-10) treated the Houston fans to a fine
pitching duel at The Astrodome. The Houston Astros eventually emerged as
victors over the St. Louis Cardinals by the score of 3 to 1.
Houston scored all of the necessary runs in the 5th inning when they scored 3
runs on 4 hits. The highlight belonged to Jim Wynn who made the crowd happy
when he stroked a single scoring two baserunners. St. Louis out-hit Houston
12 to 8, but Houston ended up with more runs.
Dave Eilers got the save, his 1st.
