After the 1967 NL season played the Opening Day game in Cincinnati yesterday, the rest of the teams had their Opening Day contests today. The Houston Astros hosted the Atlanta Braves and Mike Cuellar out-dualed Denny Lemaster for a 3-1 Houston victory. At Wrigley Field in Chicago, the Cubs defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3 with a walk off homer hit by Adolfo Phillips. It was a very good pitching battle in New York where the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Mets in 14 innings 2-1. In St. Louis, the San Francisco Giants came out victorious against the Cardinals by a 5-2 score.

Mike Cuellar allowed Grady Hatton to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game
as the Houston Astros defeated the Atlanta Braves by the score of 3 to 1 at
The Astrodome.
Houston scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning. That was all the
offense they were to need. Houston had just 6 hits for the night.
Cuellar(1-0) lasted until the end allowing 1 run for the win. The loss was
charged to Denny Lemaster(0-1). He pitched 4 innings giving up 3 hits and 3
walks.

Adolfo Phillips lofted one into the 'cheap seats' as the Chicago Cubs won at
Wrigley Field in dramatic fashion over the Philadelphia Phillies, the final
score, 4 to 3.
Chicago won the game with a run in the 9th inning. Phillips blasted a solo
shot making Chicago victorious to the delight of the the home town crowd.
Chicago banged out 9 hits on the afternoon.
Joe Niekro(1-0) got the win allowing no runs in 2 innings. Rick Wise(0-1)
ended up with the loss in relief. He pitched 1 inning allowing 3 hits and no

17,060 fans watched an exciting game at Shea Stadium. The Pittsburgh Pirates
topped the New York Mets by the slimmest of margins, 2 to 1.
The score was tied at 1 after nine. Pittsburgh came out on top in the 14th
inning. After an out was recorded, Jerry May doubled. Matty Alou next to
the plate and he banged out a single. Maury Wills then lashed a single
scoring the run. New York could do no damage in the bottom of the 14th.
Juan Pizarro(1-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 2 innings. Vern Law
gained credit for his 1st save. Don Shaw(0-1) was given the loss in relief.

Juan Marichal had a complete game at Busch Stadium where the San Francisco
Giants beat the St. Louis Cardinals by the score of 5 to 2.
St. Louis was unable to recover after San Francisco went ahead in the 2nd
inning plating one baserunner. After an out was recorded, Jim Ray Hart took
charge himself, delivering a solo home run. Although they lost, St. Louis
did out-hit San Francisco 11 to 8.
The victory was credited to Marichal(1-0) who went the distance, allowing 2
runs. Bob Gibson(0-1) took the loss. He pitched 5 innings giving up 5 hits
and no walks.
