1967 AL Game: Det. @ Bsn.

 August 15, 1967

The Detroit Tigers came into Boston for a 3 game series against the 2nd place Sox. In today's game both teams battled back a couple of times before Boston prevailed in the 10th inning. Detroit led 4-3 in the 4th inning on the strength of homeruns from Dick McAuliffe and Norm Cash. But Boston scored single runs the next 3 innings to take a 5-4 lead. In the Tiger 8th McAuliffe hit his 2nd homer of the game, a 2-run shot, and tacked on another run for a 7-5 lead. Reggie Smith hit his 2nd homer of the game for Boston in the bottom of the 8th and we were tied up at 7. The game went to extra innings and in the bottom of the 10th Detroit walked Smith intentionally with the winning run at 2nd and 2 outs. The move backfired when Joe Foy launched a 3-run bomb for a 10-7 Red Sox victory. With the Win, Boston moved within 1.5 games of Detroit.

Center fielder Reggie Smith knocked 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the Boston Red
Sox beat the Detroit Tigers in 10 innings by a score of 10 to 7.

The score was tied at 7 after nine. Finally, Boston pulled the game out in
the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Mike Ryan began the rally when
he ripped a one-base hit. Sparky Lyle followed and he laid down a sacrifice
bunt. Smith then was walked intentionally. Joe Foy was up next and he
belted a three-run homer giving Boston the victory and sending the 25,852
home-town fans home happy. Boston had a total of 13 hits for the game.

Lyle(4-1) was the winner allowing no runs in 1 and 1/3 innings. Pat
Dobson(2-4) was the losing pitcher in relief. He gave up 2 hits and 1 walk

1967 AL Standings and League Leaders

 August 15, 1967

It's halfway through the month of August in the 1967 AL season. My Detroit Tigers are still in 1st place. They lead the 2nd place Boston Red Sox by 2.5 games. The 3rd place Kansas City A's aren't going away and are just 4 games back of Detroit. The Minnesota Twins are 4.5 games behind and the Cleveland Indians are 8 games back. The Chicago White Sox have to be the most disappointing team this season. Even with the best pitching in the AL the White Sox are 10 games off their real life record and 15.5 games behind Detroit. The New York Yankees are hardly worth mentioning. They've been awful.
The Tigers are heading into Boston next for a 3 game series. Detroit is 5-8 this season against the Red Sox so this will be a good test for the Tigers. Detroit's Al Kaline (.356)  is leading the league in BA and Boston's Carl Yastrzemski (.347) is right behind Kaline while leading in HR (32) and RBI (88). Yaz has a good shot at the Triple Crown just as he did IRL. KC's Catfish Hunter leads the AL in Wins (16) and is 4th in K's (170). Boston's Jim Lonborg has 15 Wins and leads the AL in K's (184). Chicago's Joel Horlen has the best ERA (2.14) in the league. KC's Bert Champaneris leads in SB (65) by a large margin.

1967 NL Standings and League Leaders

 August 15, 1967

Halfway through the month of August. The Chicago Cubs are still hanging on to 1st place in the NL. The Pittsburgh Pirates, Cincinnati Reds and San Francisco Giants have all gained ground on the Cubs this month. Pittsburgh is currently on a 9 game winning streak. Cincinnati recently had a 9 game winning streak too. The St. Louis Cardinals have struggled the last month and a 1/2 but are still in the running for a shot at the pennant. All the teams, except for the New York Mets, are within 10.5 games of 1st place. Should be a good race to the pennant in the NL.
Jimmy Wynn of the surprising Houston Astros leads the NL in HR (37) and RBI (103). Pittsburgh teammates Matty Alou (.357) and Roberts Clemente (.349) are battling for the top BA. Chicago's Ferguson Jenkins leads the league in Wins (18).

1967 AL Game: NY @ Cle.

 August 11, 1967

Mel Stottlemyre of the New York Yankees became the first 20 game loser in MLB this season when the Cleveland Indians defeated NY 6-2 tonight. Even though the Yankees have been dreadful this season, Stottlemyre can't blame his poor record on a lack of hitting or bad defense. He's just pitched badly. His record now stands at 3-20 with a 4.90 ERA.
After winning the Cy Young Award last year (in my 1966 asplayed replay) and NY's surprising 2nd place finish, much was expected from Stottlemyre and the team this year. But it looks like they've reverted to what was expected for them last season, and I'm willing to bet they can't wait for this year to come to an end.
