There was lots of fine pitching in the slate of games played today in the NL. 3 of the 4 games ended in shutouts. Chicago's Rich Nye (13-3) 2-hit St. Louis and moved the Cubs into 1st place past the Cardinals. Ray Sadecki threw a 2-hit shutout in San Fransisco's 5-0 victory over the New York Mets. In Houston's 3-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies, pitcher Don Wilson recorded 13 strikeouts while throwing his shutout.

Clarence Jones had 2 base hits and Rich Nye was on top of his game, blanking
St. Louis on just 2 hits at Busch Stadium where the Chicago Cubs beat the St.
Louis Cardinals 4 to 0.
Nye(13-3) escaped virtually unscathed against the St. Louis hitters. He gave
up just 2 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings. Chicago totaled 13 hits on the
night.
Nelson Briles(2-6) was hit with the loss. He was knocked around by Chicago,
allowing 10 hits and 3 walks in 6 innings.
CINCINNATI AT ATLANTA

Mel Queen allowed Dave Bristol to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game
and shortstop Chico Ruiz had 2 base hits as the Cincinnati Reds defeated the
Atlanta Braves by a score of 4 to 1 at Fulton Co Stadium.
Cincinnati wasted no time and took the lead in the first inning scoring a
single run utilizing 2 base hits. After two were out Pete Rose lined a
base-hit. Dave Bristol then called for a steal which was successful. Vada
Pinson then tripled scoring the run. Cincinnati rapped out 10 hits for the
night.
The win went to Queen(5-5) who allowed 1 run in the game. Phil Niekro(5-6) was
charged with the loss. He surrendered 3 runs and 6 hits in 7 innings.
NEW YORK AT SAN FRANCISCO

Ray Sadecki held New York scoreless on just 2 hits as the San Francisco Giants
bested the New York Mets 5 to 0 at Candlestick Park.
Sadecki(5-4) was simply too much for the New York batters. He surrendered
only 2 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings lowering his ERA to 2.27. San Francisco
banged out 14 hits on the afternoon.
Tom Seaver(8-11) took the loss. He was hit hard and gave up 14 hits and 2
walks in 7 innings.
PHILADELPHIA AT HOUSTON

Don Wilson reeled off a total of 13 strikeouts at The Astrodome where the
Houston Astros beat the Philadelphia Phillies 3 to 0.
Wilson(8-6) was indeed brilliant as he hand-cuffed the Philadelphia offense.
He didn't give up much, just 4 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings. Both teams'
bats went to sleep after the 3rd inning with no runs scored after that point.
Rick Wise(3-8) was given the loss. He gave up 3 runs and 6 hits in 5 innings.
'Wilson was the man today,' Grady Hatton said. 'He had just about every
pitch working.'
