1967 MLB All Star Game

 July 11, 1967

In an exciting extra inning contest the NL All Stars defeated the AL All Stars 5-4 in 13 innings. The game started out with a bang for the AL when they scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 1st off NL starter Jerguson Jenkins. After 4 straight hits, including a 3-run homer hit by Harmon Killebrew, things were looking bad for the NL. But those were all the runs the AL would score in the game.
In the top of the 4th inning the NL got back-to-back homeruns from Roberto Clemente and Hank Aaron off Jim Kaat making it 4-2. It wasn't until the 9th inning before either team would score again. AL manager Hank Bauer brought in George Brunet to finish the game in front of his hometown fans in the top of the 9th. But he couldn't record an out and before the 9th was over the game was knotted at 4-4.
The game remained 4-4 until the 13th. Tommy Helms led off the 13th for the NL and reached 2nd base on an error committed by Tony Oliva. Jimmy Wynn was up next and he reached 1st on an error by Rico Petrocelli. With runners on the corners and no outs, Wynn stole 2nd base. Bill Singer tried to squeeze in Helms from 3rd but Helms was thrown out at the plate by pitcher Chuck Dobson. The next batter was Pete Rose when Dobson threw a wild pitch, scoring Wynn and giving the NL a 5-4 lead. The NL had scored what proved to be the winning run without a hit. Carl Yastrzemski led off the bottom of the 13th for the AL with a walk. After getting an out on Don Mincher's popup, Singer got Oliva to bounce into a game ending double-play.

The National 1967 ballclub edged the American 1967 team in 13 innings at
Anaheim Stadium by the score of 5 to 4.

The score was knotted at 4 after nine innings. National 1967 was victorious
in the 13th inning. Tommy Helms reached on an error. Jim Wynn stepped into
the batter's box and he reached on an error. Wynn was safe at second on a
stolen base. After an out was recorded, Chuck Dobson then let one get away
for a wild pitch scoring the run. National 1967 banged out 11 hits on the
afternoon.

The victory went to Bill Singer(1-0) who went 3 innings, allowing no runs.
Dobson(0-1) was the loser in relief. He was a hard-luck loser as he did not
allow an earned run in his 4 innings of work.

1967 MLB All Star Game Preview

 Tuesday July 10, 1967

This season's All Star Game will be played at Anaheim Stadium, home of the AL California Angels. Below are the rosters for each league. In the AL, injuries to Detroit's Al Kaline and Baltimore's Frank Robinson will prevent them from playing. Boston's Jim Lonborg had been slated to start the game for the AL, but he pitched a complete game on Sunday so he may not even appear in the game. Kansas City's Catfish Hunter has been given the starting spot. In the NL, Atlanta's Denny Lemaster won't be appearing due to injury. Chicago Cub Ferguson Jenkins will start for the NL.

1967 AL Standings at the All Star break

 July 10, 1967

The AL breaks for the All Star Game tomorrow in Anaheim, home of the California Angels. The Minnesota Twins are in 1st place in the AL. The Twins have the best offense in the AL led by Bob Allison and Harmon Killebrew. They've also gotten steady pitching by the likes of Jim Kaat and Dean Chance. My 2nd place Detroit Tigers lost their last 3 games at home against the Boston Red Sox heading into the break. Injuries to Al Kaline, Willie Horton and Don Wert have really hampered them as of late. They'll try to regroup when play resumes on July 13th.
The Kansas City Athletics remain the surprise team in the AL this season. Their 47-37 record finds them in 3rd place. They've been getting fine pitching from the likes of Catfish Hunter and Chuck Dobson. Only the Chicago White Sox staff has pitched better than the Athletics. The White Sox offensive woes have held them back from being higher in the standings. Speaking of woes, the New York Yankees continue to struggle mightily both offensively and on the mound. Their -106 Runs/Agnst Differential is the worst in the AL.

Steve Carlton(5-5) was on top of his game in Philadelphia as he tossed a
beauty of a no-hitter against the Philadelphia Phillies. The St. Louis
Cardinals won by a score of 1 to 0.

Carlton was obviously at the top of his game as he set the Philadelphia
batters down like so many dominoes. He walked 6 Philadelphia batters. The
tension started to build around the 6th inning. By the 9th inning the crowd
was electrified. St. Louis had only 4 hits for the game.

Larry Jackson(12-4) was charged with the loss. He surrendered only 1 run and
4 hits in 8 innings. 'Carlton pitched one heck of a game!' Red Schoendienst
said. 'He didn't get away with any bad pitches because he just didn't throw
any bad pitches. What a performance!'
