WEB GEMS- Bot 5th: Bill Freehan blocked the plate, saving a run!

Jim Northrup went yard and had 3 RBI as the Detroit Tigers really laid it on
the pathetic New York Yankees 17 to 2.

New York found themselves trailing quickly as the Detroit bats came through in
the first inning with 2 runs. After an out was recorded, Dick McAuliffe was
the sparkplug when he drew a walk. Al Kaline was next and he cleared the
fences for a two-run home run. Detroit bats were hot in the 8th inning with
4 runs on 3 hits. Detroit kept the pressure on throughout the contest as
they scored in 6 different innings.

The win went to Denny McLain(7-4) who allowed 2 runs in 8 innings. Al
Downing(4-5) took the loss. He was hit hard and gave up 7 hits and 3 walks
in 2 and 2/3 innings.

With this win, Detroit has a league leading 39-26 record. They have been 7-3
lately. Still in a bad slump, with this loss, New York is 2-8 lately and
17-47, worst in the league on the year.
