April 11, 1967
It was the first game of the 1967 season for my Detroit Tigers who were at Anaheim Stadium in California playing the host Angels. It took 12 innings, but the Tigers pulled out a 3-2 victory.
Detroit had many opportunities to score early in the game because California starter George Brunet was having a hard time throwing strikes. He walked the bases loaded in the 1st, but Al Kaline hit into a home-to-first double play and Jim Northrup flied out, keeping the game scoreless. In the 3rd inning Kaline hit into another bases loaded double play, but a run scored this time for 1-0 Detroit lead. In the 4th inning the Tigers had the first 2 batters on base when Dick McAuliffe hit into a triple play! (1st-to 2nd-to 1st). Detroit left 14 men on base in the game.
Denny McLain pitched a very strong game for Detroit but he made 1 big mistake. In the 5th inning with the Tigers leading 2-0, McLain served up a gopher ball to Angel 2nd baseman Bobby Knoop. It was a 2-run shot, so the game was tied at 2 where in remained until the 12th inning. McLain's pitching line on the game was: 8 IP, 2 H, 4 W, 10 K, 2 ER but he got no decision.
As bad a start Kaline had in the game (2AB 2DP), he did end up with a good day. He singled in a run in the 5th, and had 3 more hits after that. Kaline ended the night 4 for 6 with 1 RBI. His double in the top of the 12th sent Norm Cash to 3rd, and Jim Northrup followed with a sacrifice fly which drove in what proved to be the winning run. Detroit got good work out of the bullpen with Bill Monbouquette going the final 2 innings for the Win.
