The first game of the best of 3 games playoff between the Chicago Cubs and San Francisco Giants was played in Chicago today. It was a tight game as expected and took 12 innings to decide. Fergie Jenkins got the start for Chicago and Gaylord Perry started for SF. It was 2-2 at the start of the 12th when Jim Davenport hit a 2 out 2-run homer for the Giants. Frank Linzy was excellent in relief for the Giants and got the Win. Jesus Alou had 4 hits, scoring twice and Willie Mays had 2 RBI for the winning team. The series now moves to San Francisco for the next 2 games, if necessary, with the Giants holding a commanding edge.

Left fielder Jesus Alou had 4 hits at Wrigley Field where the San Francisco
Giants beat the Chicago Cubs in 12 innings by the score of 4 to 2.
Both teams had scored 2 runs after nine full innings. Finally, San Francisco
pulled the game out in the 12th inning. Willie McCovey kicked off the action
when he drew a walk. Two outs later Jim Davenport came to bat and popped a
two-run clout over the fence. For the game San Francisco out-hit Chicago 11
to 5.
The win was credited to Frank Linzy(7-0) who went 3 innings allowing no runs.
Bob Shaw(1-10) took the loss in relief. He surrendered 3 hits and 1 walk in
2 innings.
