NL 1967 Standings and League Leaders

 September 1, 1967

We're entering the final full month of the 1967 MLB season. The Chicago Cubs are still in 1st place in the NL. But the Cubbies are still in a heated pennant race with at least 5 teams hot on their tail. The San Francisco Giants were a league best 20-10 in August and are only 2 GB Chicago. Pittsburgh is in 3rd place and the 4th place St. Louis Cardinals, though they continue to struggle after going 15-17 in August, are still only 6 games back. Their pitching is the best in the league but their offense continues to struggle. This last month should prove to be a very exciting one in the NL.
Looking at the NL League Leaders, Houston's Jimmy Wynn's name jumps out at you immediately. You don't expect to see it there but he's putting up amazing numbers in HR (44) and RBI (121). No one else is even close in those 2 categories. Pittsburgh's Matty Alou still leads the NL in hitting with a .363 BA. Atlanta's Hank Aaron (35 HR, 45 RBI) and Chicago's Ron Santo (28 HR, 107 RBI) both have to be mentioned, as well as Cincinnati's Tony Perez (27 HR, 95 RBI) for the fine seasons they're having.
Chicago's Fergie Jenkins and Philadelphia's Larry Jackson lead the league in Wins with 19. San Francisco's Juan Marichal (15-10) has the top ERA (2.16) and the Phillies Jim Bunning leads in K's (212).
