1967 MLB As Played Replay Wrap Up

  Well, my 1967 replay is over. I started it in January 2021 so it took over 2 years to complete. I did complete another full season as-played replay (2006) during that time, and spent a few months in the hospital. It was a few weeks after I got home before I could even walk down the stairs to the basement where this replay waited for me to complete on the desktop computer. 

  I did accomplish my goal. I managed the Detroit Tigers to the AL Championship. But I couldn't defeat the San Francisco Giants in the World Series.

1967 AL Awards

   The AL Award winners were announced today. Boston's Carl Yastrzemski (.351 BA, 46 HR, 125 RBI) was named the AL MVP. He won the AL Triple Crown with an amazing season. Yaz's teammate Jim Lonborg (22-11, 2.85 ERA, 272 K's) won the AL Cy Young Award. Lonborg was the only 20 game winner this season in the AL. He also led the league in K's. 2 of my Detroit Tigers, the surprising Joe Sparma (18-8, 2.74 ERA) and Mickey Lolich (18-9, 2.95 ERA) finished in the top 4 in voting. Another Tiger, Al Kaline (.344 BA, 31 HR, 100 RBI), battled Yastrzemski for the BA Title all season and finished 3rd in MVP voting. Another of my Tigers, 2nd baseman Dick McAuliffe (.257, BA, 31 HR, 84 RBI), had an unexpected great season and finished 4th in the voting.

  Detroit's Mayo Smith was named AL Manager of the year. The Tiger's Fred Gladding got the Rolaid's Fireman Relief Pitcher Award.

1967 NL Awards

 The NL Awards were announced today. Houston's Jimmy Wynn won the NL MVP Award. Wynn had a spectacular season for the Astro's, leading the league in Homeruns (55) and RBI (144) while hitting .276. He edged out the Chicago Cubs Ron Santo (33 HR, 133 RBI, .310 BA). Chicago's Ferguson Jenkins (21-14, 3.21 ERA, 229 K's) won the NL Cy Young Award.  He narrowly edged Philadelphia's Larry Jackson (23-10, 2.59 ERA, 158 K's). I personally would have given it to Jackson. 

  San Francisco Giants' Herman Franks was named NL Manager of the Year. Pittsburgh Pirate's Roy Face was the Rolaid's Fireman Relief Pitcher of the Year.

1967 World Series Wrap Up

 October 15, 1967

  It's the day after the 1967 World Series which was won by the San Francisco Giants. The Giant's Mike McCormick was voted World Series MVP. I felt Willie McCovey should have won it, but McCormick is a decent choice. Here are some final stats from the Series.

1967 World Series Game 6: San Francisco Wins the World Series!

 October 14, 1967

  The World Series moved back to Detroit for Game 6 and the San Francisco Giants made sure there would be no Game 7 with a decisive 7-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers. The San Francisco Giants are the 1967 MLB Champions!

  Giant starter Ray Sadecki was impressive on the mound going 7 innings and allowing only 1 run for the Win. 3rd baseman Jimmy Ray Hart had really been struggling the whole Series, but he hit 2 homeruns in the game. The first came in the 2nd inning to start the Giant's scoring. SF added another run in the 2nd and that would be all they'd need for the victory. Tom Haller hit a homerun in the 3rd for a 3-0 lead and Willie Mays followed with a double. That was the end of the day for Tiger starter Earl Wilson. Detroit's bullpen was not sharp in this game, allowing SF 4 more runs. 

   Detroit didn't get a hit off Sadecki until the 5th inning. They threatened in the 6th, scoring 1 run but left the bases loaded and came up empty in the 7th after loading the bases again.

  Congratulations to the San Francisco Giants, 1967 World Series Champions!!

Jim Ray Hart launched 2 homeruns as the San Francisco Giants beat the Detroit
Tigers by a score of 7 to 1.
 
Detroit was unable to recover after San Francisco went ahead in the 2nd inning
plating 2 runs on 2 hits.  After an out was recorded, Hart kicked off the
action when he ripped a solo home run.  Ollie Brown stepped into the batter's
box and he drew a walk.  Jim Davenport then slapped a base-hit.  Hal Lanier
followed next and he would ground out scoring the final run of the inning.
That scoring would be all that was needed.  San Francisco had 10 hits for the
game and Detroit had 6.  
 
The victory went to Ray Sadecki(1-1) who went 7 innings, allowing 1 run. Earl
Wilson(0-2) was the loser.  He allowed San Francisco 4 runs in 2 and 1/3
innings of work.

1967 World Series Game 5: Det. @ SF

 October 12, 1967

  It was do or die time for the Detroit Tigers in Game 5 of the 1967 World Series. Trailing the San Francisco Giants 3 games to 1, Detroit HAD to win. The Tigers started the game out on the right note when Norm Cash singled home 2 runs in the top of the 1st inning. Detroit starter Mickey Lolich was on top of his game and kept the Giants off balance all day. His counterpart, Gaylord Perry, was throwing good as well. SF got a run in the 5th and Detroit got another run in the 7th inning for a 3-1 lead. With Perry out the game in the top of the 9th, Al Kaline singled home 2 runners for a more comfortable 5-1 lead. Willie Mays homered for SF in the bottom of the 9th but Lolich was able to close it out with a 5-2 Tiger Win. The Series shifts now back to Detroit for Game 6, and Game 7 if necessary, with San Francisco holding a 3-2 advantage.

Mickey Lolich allowed Mayo Smith to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game
and Al Kaline had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Detroit Tigers defeated the
San Francisco Giants 5 to 2 at Candlestick Park.
 
Detroit set the tone of the game in the first inning with 2 runs on 3 hits.
After an out was recorded, Don Wert got things going when he slapped a
one-base hit.  Kaline stepped into the batter's box and he drew a walk.
Willie Horton then slapped a single to load the bases.  Norm Cash stepped in
and he laced a base-hit driving in two more baserunners.  Detroit rapped out
9 hits for the afternoon.  
 
Lolich(1-1), allowing 2 runs for the game, picked up the victory. Gaylord
Perry(1-1) ended up with the loss.  Despite the loss, he struck out 13 Detroit
batters in 8 innings.

1967 World Series Game 4: Det. @ SF

 October 11, 1967

 In another well pitched game by both teams, Game 4 of the 1967 World Series was won 2-1 by the San Francisco Giants over the Detroit Tigers. Mike McCormick, who shutout Detroit in Game 1, went the distance again for the Giants allowing only 4 hits. Willie McCovey had antoher good game for SF going 3 for 3 with 1 RBI. Denny McLain started for Detroit and went 7 innings allowing only 1 earned run, but still ended up with the loss. 

  The SF Giants now lead the World Series 3 games to 1. Game 5 tomorrow here in San Francisco will feature Gaylord Perry going up against Mickey Lolich. The Giants would love to wrap up the World Series here at home while the Tigers would like to get it back to Detroit.

Mike McCormick went 9 strong innings as the San Francisco Giants defeated the
Detroit Tigers 2 to 1 at Candlestick Park.
 
San Francisco scored 1 run in the decisive 3rd inning when they came up with 3
base hits.  That early scoring was all that McCormick(2-0) needed.  Neither
team managed to score after the 3rd inning.  
 
The loss was charged to Denny McLain(0-1).  'I thought it was my best
performance in a long time,' said McCormick. 'I had good command early in the
game. I had my control and composure and everything went well.'
