1967 NL Game: Hous @ St.L

 June 5, 1967

Besides being one of the longest games of the season, tonight's affair between the Houston Astros and St. Louis Cardinals was also the lowest scoring with St. Louis winning 1-0 after 15 innings.
Astro started Dave Giusti went 10 scoreless innings, and the Cardinal's Larry Jaster went 9. St. Louis won the game in the bottom of the 15th when Tim McCarver tripled and Mike Shannon singled him home.

recorded, Tim McCarver tripled. Shannon stepped up next and he smacked a
single resulting in an exciting win for St. Louis and a raucous post-game
celebration by the home town fans. St. Louis managed only 6 hits on the
night.

Hal Woodeshick(1-1) was the winner allowing no runs in 1 inning. Barry
Latman(1-3) absorbed the loss in relief. He surrendered 1 run and 3 hits in

1967 AL Standings and League Leaders

 June 1, 1967

The month of May is in the books and my Detroit Tigers are in 1st place in the AL. But the rest of the league, excluding New York, are still very much in the hunt at this point in the season. The Yankees had a better month in May than their horrendous April start, but they still have the worst run production in the AL along with the worst pitching. Detroit had a so-so May going 13-12, but the 2nd place Boston Red Sox were only 14-14. Chicago, Kansas City, Minnesota, California, and Baltimore were all able to gain ground on the league leaders. The 8th place Orioles are only 5.5 games out of 1st.
My Tigers have the best offense in the AL and are led by Al Kaline. Kaline's hitting a league best .417, leads in RBI with 37 and is 4th in HR (8). Teammate's Willie Horton (32 RBI) and Jim Northrup (28 RBI) are 2nd and 4th in the AL respectively. Pitcher Mickey Lolich is tied with most Wins (7) and 4th in K's (62). 2nd place Boston is right behind Detroit in offense with Carl Yastrzemski leading the way. Yaz is 3rd in BA (.356), 2nd in HR (10) and 3rd in RBI (29). Pitcher Jim Lonborg is 7-1 with a 2.60 ERA , and 69 K's.
The 3rd place Chicago White Sox boast, by far, the best pitching in the AL. Led by starters Jim O'Toole (1.56 ERA), Joe Horlen (2.32), Gary Peters (2.39), and Tommy John (2.51) they don't give up many runs. They are backed by a strong bullpen of Hoyt Wilhelm (1-0, 2 SV, 0.00 ERA), Bob Locker (2-1, 1 SV, 1.23 ERA), and Wilbur Wood (1-1, 1 SV, 2.33 ERA).
The 4th place Kansas City Athletics may be the most surprising team in the league. Not expected to fair too well this season, the A's have gotten steady offense from the likes of Rick Monday (.371, 9 HR, 22 RBI) and Danny Cater (.306, 24 RBI). In pitching, Catfish Hunter (7-3, 2.83 ERA, 71 K) is tied with most Wins in the AL and 2nd in strikeouts. Chuck Dobson is 4-1 with a league best 1.59 ERA. SS Bert Campaneris leads the league in Stolen Bases with 23.
Other top performers this season have been Washington's Frank Howard, 1st in HR (12), along with California's George Brunet who is 7-2 with a 2.09 ERA and Bill Kelso (1.57 ERA, 11 Saves). Cleveland's starters have shined. Sonny Siebert is 4-1 with a 1.81 ERA, Steve Hargan (5-3, 2.38 ERA) and Sam McDowell who is 1st in K's with 73. The Indians started the season well but the offense struggled in May resulting in a 9-17 record for the month. The Minnesota Twins had a slow start in April (6-9), but bounced back with a league best 16-11 in May. Ceasar Tovar (.322 BA, 10 SB) and Jim Kaat (6-2, 2.84 ERA) have led the charge. Besides NY, the Baltimore Orioles also had a horrible start to the season, 4-12 in April. Their 15-9 record in May moved them a little closer (19-21) to the .500 mark and as stated at the outset, only 5.5 GB the league leaders.

1967 NL Standings and League Leaders

 June 1, 1967

We've reached the month of June in the 1967 MLB season. The Chicago Cubs have moved into 1st place by going a NL best 20-7 in May. Fergie Jenkins (8-2, 2.64 ERA) and Ron Santo (35 RBI, 2nd in NL) lead the way for the Cubs. 7 teams are at .500 or better in the NL, so the race for the pennant is still up for grabs for all the teams. Only the floundering New York Mets (12-28) can see little light at the end of the tunnel.
The 3rd place Philadelphia Phillies have Dick Allen leading the NL in BA (.366), tied for most HR (12) and 3rd in RBI (34). Pitchers Larry Jackson (8-2, 1.88 ERA) and Chris Short (6-3, 3.30 ERA) are among the league leaders. Houston's Jimmy Wynn leads the NL in HR (12) and RBI (36).
